Children talk about mindfulness in “Just Breathe” short film. For many of us, when we think about mindfulness an image of a middle-aged white male with an intense expression on his face or a twenty something year old young white female with perfect skin and body come to mind. But what about children? Why is mindfulness saved till after our emotional and spiritual wounds are deep-seated? Is it necessary to wait until so many negative and destructive patterns are in place? Isn’t it time to include meditation and mindfulness in child rearing so we don’t have to spend half our lives working on reversing and reprogramming all of those negative and destructive patterns that have created a disconnect from our Higher Self, family, friends and community?

We’re interrupting your regular mindfulness news roster to bring you: Children talking about mindfulness. Because, really, after hearing mindfulness’ benefits trumpeted from Wall Street to ABC News to practically everywhere else, we could use a little plain language. A little straight talk—from little people. In the four-minute film, kindergarteners talk about coping with emotions and using meditation and breathing techniques.
Filmmakers Julie Bayer Salzman and Josh Salzman created “Just Breathe” with their son, classmates, and family members one Saturday afternoon.“The film is entirely unscripted,” says Julie. “What the kids say is based purely on their own neuro-scientific understanding of difficult emotions, and how they cope through breathing and meditation.“They, in turn, are teaching us all.”Julie was inspired to create the film after taking a six-week course with Mindful Schools, an organization that teaches mindfulness in US schools.
Julie and Josh recently announced that “Just Breathe” will air on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s Super Soul Sunday program, April 12th, after Oprah’s interview with the mindfulness pioneer Jon Kabat-Zinn.”

In my experience working with children and teenagers, training them in meditation and mindfulness, the results have been outstanding. Generally speaking, children and teenagers easily and quickly grasp basic meditation skills. When children talk about mindfulness and meditation, I am blown away by their experiences. Many children talk about mindfulness and meditation after their first or second experience as if they have been practicing for 25 years, like myself! I leave inspired and full of hope for peace, respect, and kindness, culturally and globally.
In the video above, children talk about mindfulness and their experiences with meditation with clarity and honesty. Just breathe. It really is that simple. Just breathe.
