Holistic Counseling
We all benefit from additional support and guidance from time to time. Holistic counseling can help. In holistic counseling, we view clients as whole people with challenges that are expressed in various aspects of our being; mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. They are all related and interconnected. We support one element of ourselves and the rest may also need attention, or this may create an imbalance. When we address our life as a whole including mental and emotional obstacles, physical health, social and family concerns, relationships, professional life, and our economic situations as a system that are part of who we are, we can create a foundation of well-being and balance.
My work is Brief Holistic Counseling/Coaching. We will typically work together for six months or 8-12 sessions, depending on your treatment plan and what is needed. You will be given “homework assignments” to work on between sessions. These “assignments” will be a mix of internal(reflection/awareness) and external(research/actions) to aid in your growth and development. My experience over the last twenty-five years has demonstrated that the work between sessions creates the momentum, hope, and focus to achieve what we are working on in such a short amount of time. This is what makes Brief Holistic Counseling so effective! When we have an “expiration date”, we become highly motivated to succeed and shift the challenges we are experiencing!
WHAT IS HOLISTIC COUNSELING?
Counseling can be very beneficial for people working through personal
problems such as past trauma, mental illness, or relationship issues. Typically, modern medicine has provided counseling in a modern medicine type of way through talk therapy and medication support if needed. Holistic counseling and holistic therapies are on the rise in many of these counseling facilities, providing a different approach to dealing with mental health. Let’s look at what this holistic form of counseling is all about.
Holistic Counseling Addresses The Physical
Many holistic professionals believe that the body can control how a person feels on a more mental level. Something like depression or anxiety may be related to a predetermined mental health issue, but it may be able to be effectively controlled and managed by using more physical treatment options. These treatments can vary but often include:
Diet
What a person eats may very well affect how they feel, and what they may be lacking can also have an effect. Many holistic professionals will take a detailed look at what a patient consumes daily and ask them to cut out things like alcohol, refined sugars, and processed foods. These things can increase a person’s anxiety and depression very quickly.
Alignment
According to some professionals, the body’s overall alignment may affect mental health. Things like chiropractic care or ongoing yoga practices can help align the body and keep it in sync physically and mentally.
Senses
New treatments are being used, like sensory deprivation chambers, saltwater chambers, and so on, that help heal the body and help it function optimally to promote healthy mental health.
Keeping the body functioning at its best will help a person feel good physically and mentally. These two things function very hand in hand.
Holistic Counseling Addresses The Spiritual
Another aspect of this holistic care is addressing the spiritual side of life. A person who doesn’t have any concept or belief in the afterlife or beyond this realm of thinking often experiences things like depression or anxiety. They don’t always feel they have a greater purpose, which can cause a patient to spiral out of control. When a practitioner incorporates spirituality into a treatment plan, this can help a person heal from past experiences and give them a better sense of self.
Holistic Counseling Addresses The Psychological
Traditional forms of counseling are still used in therapy and other holistic counseling techniques. This can include talk therapy, hypnotism, and exposure therapy. Each of these treatments works with the brain to help a person understand their feelings better and cope. Putting all of this therapy together can help a person feel better and help them function better in their day-to-day life.
Of course, different treatments work for different people, and just because holistic therapy works for one person doesn’t mean everybody will see results. It is also important to get a recommendation for a counselor in your area that holds a good reputation among its clients and other medical and mental health professionals in the area.

“Michael is the best counselor I have ever been to. He’s kind, thoughtful, and he really listens. He’s the first person who ever truly made me feel heard. He is a great counselor who cares a lot about his clients and truly wishes to see them well. In hindsight, there is nothing I think he could have done better to help me. He was and still is excellent.” Victoria
