This short film provides an opportunity for us to explore how gender roles of listening are expressed in relationships. I invite you to pay attention to how this short film affects you. Does it bring up anger, sadness, fear, anxiety, frustration, laughter, or any other emotions? What are your thoughts about your current or previous partners as you watch this short film? Jason Headley’s short films have been featured on NBC’s TODAY Show, SundanceTV, Banksy’s Dismaland, the front page of Funny or Die, the TED Conference, Vimeo Staff Picks, and film festivals far and wide. Jason has been selected to participate in the IFP Emerging Storytellers program. He’s also been commissioned by Heineken, Sony, and Chrysler to write, direct, and produce original short films. Fun fact: Jason is more handsome in real life than he is on camera, but he’s still not actually handsome.
The gender roles of listening apply to more than we think. They show up in relationships, family, work, school, and socializing. Of course, this does not apply to all people or all relationships between men and women. They also get expressed in relationships that are not male/female. These are some engendered patterns that are very common and play out in all kinds of interesting ways.
