There Is No Such Thing As Positive or Negative Emotions

We tend to describe emotions as positive or negative, but there is no such thing as positive emotions or negative emotions. All emotions are needed and part of being a healthy human. We may have emotions we don’t like, but that does not mean they are negative or that we should avoid them.

I am curious about what you consider negative emotions and why they are negative.

Instead of backing away from negative emotions, accept them. Acknowledge how you are feeling without rushing to change your emotional state. Many people find it helpful to breathe slowly and deeply while learning to tolerate strong feelings or to imagine the feelings as floating clouds, as a reminder that they will pass. I often tell my clients that a thought is just a thought and a feeling just a feeling, nothing more. Scientific American

I invite you to explore why you may be avoiding certain emotions.

What are you protecting?

What would happen if you chose to stay present when you feel these emotions?

What do these emotions symbolize to you, and what are they attached to?

Why is fear necessary for a healthy life? Sadness? Pain? Loss? Joy? Peace? Acceptance? Belonging?

Why do we need balanced emotions, thoughts, and feelings?

Why do we feel the need to lie to ourselves about what we are experiencing?

“Remember, one of the primary reasons we have emotions in the first place is to help us evaluate our experiences,”. Jonothan M. Adler
