When we think of counseling, we often imagine sitting across from a counselor in a quiet room. But healing doesn’t always have to happen indoors. At Providence Holistic Counseling in Rhode Island, I offer Walk and Talk Counseling—a refreshing alternative that invites movement, nature, and fresh air into the therapeutic process.
Looking for a different way to reflect on your life?
Do movement & fresh air help you think & talk more easily?
Does sitting in an office face-to-face with a counselor feel like an uncomfortable way to work on your issues?
Does being outdoors help you tap into a sense of wisdom & belonging?
What is Walk and Talk Counseling?
Walk and Talk Counseling is a form of counseling that takes place outdoors, typically in a local park or trail. Instead of sitting in an office, the counselor and client walk side by side, engaging in meaningful conversation while enjoying the benefits of nature.
This approach can reduce the intensity of face-to-face conversation and help clients feel more relaxed. The gentle rhythm of walking can also support emotional processing, self-reflection, and a deeper sense of grounding.
Why Choose Walk and Talk?
There are many benefits to moving counseling outdoors:
- Reduced anxiety and stress: Exposure to nature has been shown to lower cortisol levels and improve mood (Berman et al., 2012).
- Improved mental clarity: Walking can stimulate cognitive functioning and creativity (Oppezzo & Schwartz, 2014).
- Enhanced openness: Walking side by side may make difficult conversations feel more natural and less intimidating.
- Holistic wellness: Combining physical activity with emotional support promotes whole-person healing.
For clients who feel stuck, overwhelmed, or disconnected, Walk and Talk Counseling can offer a welcome sense of movement—both physically and emotionally.
Come walk with me!
I meet with clients in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, for walks year-round. We meet at my home office and stroll through my quiet, peaceful neighborhood with minimal cars, no stores, and lovely views of a marsh, a beach, and lots of trees.
- Counseling walks are less private than office-based counseling. Think about how comfortable you’d be running into a friend/colleague during a session or expressing strong emotions in public.
- When the weather’s bad, we pivot to either meet virtually or at my office; it’s where we would meet anyway. Winter walks often require warm, comfortable layers & gear, & summer ones may need sunscreen, bug spray, and cold drinks.
- I can make accommodations for clients who’d like to work outdoors but have physical limits that make a long walk inaccessible (please ask).
